Biography

Faculty Bio

Martin Marafioti has been a faculty member in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at 91ÊÓƵ since 2004. He completed his Ph.D. in Italian Studies at the Johns Hopkins University, specializing in Italian Medieval and Early Modern literature and the intersections between literature and medicine.

He recently has published a translation of Michele Savonarola’s Mother’s Manual for the Women of Ferrara, a Fifteenth Century Guide to Pregnancy and Pediatrics [Ed. Gabriella Zuccolin] (Iter Press, University of Toronto, 2022); and a monograph titled
Storytelling as Plague Prevention in Medieval and Early Modern Italy (Routledge, 2018).

At 91ÊÓƵ, Dr. Marafioti teaches a wide variety of courses including Italian language, Spanish language, Italian Literature, as well as courses he has developed that focus on an analysis of Italy through its cinema, representations of gender and sexuality in popular and official culture, Italian cultural identity, and the role of narrative throughout periods of epidemic illness.
